Starving for Gas

Nowadays not many people seem aware that nearly everything they eat and most of what they drink is produced using nitrogen fertilisers. And nitrogen fertilisers are almost entirely made using natural gas. Indeed half the world's people would not be here today were it not for the tripling in global food production achieved largely through the use of this invaluable petrochemical byproduct. |

Solar thermal electricity
http://www.abc.net.au/rn/scienceshow/stories/2009/2703531.htm
Sarah Castor-Perry presents an update on research into solar thermal electricity. Colin Duck describes a demonstration plant at the Liddell Power Station in NSW. Rows of mirrors concentrate heat from the sun which turns water to steam in a central tube. This steam then drives turbines producing electricity. |

Two States, Two Paths to Clean Energy
By Kate Galbraith
http://greeninc.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/20/two-states-two-paths-to-clean-energy/
Things are quite different in Texas. In 2006, that state’s land commissioner, Jerry Patterson, talked to me about the wind boom in Texas — and the fate of migratory birds in the Gulf of Mexico, where Texas has long (and thus far unsuccessfully) sought to put offshore turbines.
“There are going to be some seagulls popped,” Mr. Patterson acknowledged. He then added, “After several generations, we’ll have smarter birds.”
Mr. Patterson was joking — mostly. In California, however, such jokes would likely fall flat. |

Comision Federal de Electricidad, CFE, has advised Belize Electricity Limited that it is cancelling the guaranteed power supply contract (Firm Contract) with BEL, due to circumstances that are beyond its control. This contract was to expire in December of next year.
