Pronatura, the most influential Mexican conservationist NGO, celebrated its 25th anniversary last Thursday 29th of March during its Annual Assembly, held at the impressive Castillo de Chapultepec in Mexico City. The event was attended by over 350 persons, including eight of the founding members of Pronatura. The keynote speech of the evening was delivered by Hector Ceballos-Lascurain, who was the founding president of Pronatura (period 1981-1983), who reminisced on the founding of this important NGO and the first conservation actions carried out by the association (including several ecotourism activities). Ceballos-Lascurain mentioned that in 1981 there were no public authorities interested in the conservation of Mexico's rich natural heritage, which motivated the creation of Pronatura. Today this NGO is comprised of Pronatura A.C. and five representative offices around the country. In 2006, 110 million pesos were channeled towards conservation actions.

Other speakers at the 25th anniversary event were Guillermo Barroso, present President of Pronatura, Ing. Juan Elvira Quesada, Minister of the Environment, and Dr. José Sarukhán, president of CONABIO.

ANNOUNCEMENT - This weekend look for the Ambientarte eco fair in Mexico City's Parque España (17-19 October). The fair is an inspired celebration of natural and cultural diversity. Many of our favorite artesanos and natural food producers from Oaxaca are participating, so look for Ayuuk ceramics -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/planeta/sets/72157600040115396 -- and tasty sausages and cheese.

Mark your calendar! This weekend in Mexico City Ambientarte holds its 9th fair in Parque España, Colonia Condesa. The eco market features natural goods and crafts from all over Mexico. Highly recommended.
