|
|
I traveled through the state of Chiapas a week ago guiding an Austrian group of teachers.
The Sumidero Canyon is a mayor atraction, we do a one and a half hour tour looking for cocodriles, monkeys, parrots, buzzard, voltures, pelicans, igrets, etc. and a rich flora.
I was deeply shoked this time, because we had to cross a big obstacle of floating plastic garbage (pvc) and a bad odor.
We visited ceveral villages and drove from San Cristobal de las Casas to Palenque, stoping at the waterfalls of Agua Azul.
To my sadness more and more dwelings are growing like mushrooms a long the river and unluckily their sewage is contaminaiting the water.
How on earth will I be able to keep on taking visitours to these once beautiful places? |

Following up on Marlene's warning about Sumidero Canyon ... here's an article about the pollution published this week by Reforma and the Terra website:
Es el CaÒÛn del Sumidero un basurero
"Toneladas de basura afean y contaminan uno de los lugares m·s hermosos y emblem·ticos de Chiapas"

QUESTION -- What is the best course of action for tour guides (such as Marlene) who see such problems first-hand?
BRAINSTORMING -- Mexico plays host next year to the World Water Forum and perhaps it might be a good idea to compile a list of places to visit. It does not have to be limited to 'best practices' but it should show the places where positive action is taking place. It could even become a post forum tour with Marlene as guide! |

Thanks to Marlene for an informative post. A reminder and two requests
REMINDER -- This particular topic seeks input for the Planeta.com water guide. Many of the tips and suggestions posted here and elsewhere on the forum have been incorporated online
>> http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/resources/water.html
We do have a discussion about the upcoming 2006 World Water Forum. The first request is that ANY news about the official forum or parallel forums be posted online
>> http://forum.planeta.com/viewtopic.php?t=287
(If that URL does not work, look up the topic in the water forum)
Second request. Marlene, can you add the location and time for the presentation of ConservAgua on World Tourism Day? |

HEADLINES -- This Means War - John McClelland/Mexico Connet
| Quote: | | Water is a hot topic in Mexico these days. In March 2006, Mexico City will host the fourth annual World Water Forum. Up to 25,000 delegates are expected to attend said Cesar Herrera, Technical Secretary of the Forum. In addition, recurring water shortages in Mexico City and the physical sinking of that city due to overuse of the groundwater aquifers have brought water to the fore of public attention. The situation is serious enough that President Fox has declared water "a strategic resource of national security." |
