New online Planeta.com

Conservation Geography in Honduras by Mark Bonta
Keywords: Birding, Olancho, Honduras, Central America, Community Tourism, Birding, Conservation, Landscape, NGOs

"HONDURAS -- Conservation solutions are always contextual what works in
Olancho may not work in other regions. Solutions for La Venta may have
little luck in El Boqueron. Experimentation is of the essence conservation
should be strategic and malleable more often than rigid and plan-driven.
Following are themes and possibilities for conservation in Olancho that are
both geographical and practical and may serve to inspire work in other
regions."

Mark Bonta is an assistant professor at Delta State University. This article
is excerpted from Mark's book Seven Names for the Bellbird: Conservation
Geography in Honduras <http://tinyurl.com/yttfk> published in 2003 by Texas A&M Press. For permission to reprint the article, contact the author.

UPDATE!

The Planeta.com feature "Visit to Celaque National Park" by
Alexis Aguilar has been updated. The first version was published online in 1996.

EXCERPTS:

Celaque National Park contains the largest, highest and best preserved cloud forest in Honduras.

The wet season is from May to October followed by a marked dry season. The 34 villages located within the park's boundaries total some 2800 inhabitants mostly of Lenca origin, a Mesoamerican indigenous group that has inhabited the region for thousands of years (Celaque means "box of water" in the Lenca language).

I returned to Celaque in July 2004 and noticed that many things had changed little since my last visit. Specifically, there has been little development of tourist infrastructure and park staff remains minimal. The German-funded Proyecto Celaque has ended and very little institutional presence and funding remains for the park.

Celaque remains a beautiful and peaceful place where to commune with nature and with people who amidst their poverty are generous, upbeat, and curious about their world and the world outside. They hold a special reverence for "The Mountain" and are the park's main protectors.

Mass tourism latest menace for Honduran Garifuna - Catherine Bremer/Reuters
Thu Jun 9, 8:34 AM ET
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20050609/lf_nm/life_honduras_garifuna_dc_1

Quote:
The powder sand, turquoise sea and sun of this unspoiled corner of northwest Honduras have investors salivating. Planned tourist complexes could spell the end of the centuries-old way of life of the black minority here known as Garifuna. Sanchez fears a $100 million luxury hotel complex and golf course to be built next to his tiny wooden-shack village will destroy the local habitat and turn his sons from traditional fishers into low-paid menial workers.

QUOTABLE -- "Development from outside organizations, governments, and businesses is necessary for the nation to move forward but it must be on our terms, through our leaders, and directed towards our goals. Those against development or wishing to profit from it, use these arguments to hijack the development agenda and development money. Development will only work if leaders that are dedicated to Honduras, to her sustained improvement, and to a national dream, lead us."
