I would be keen to hear from travellers whether or not the beaches they visit are clean or contaminated. I wrote a small piece on this issue in April following much hoohah in the media.

Recent press bulletins from SEMARNAT

Las secretar??as de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, de Marina, de Turismo y de Salud confirman que las condiciones bacteriol??gicas de las playas en los destinos tur??sticos del pa??s son adecuadas para realizar actividades tur??sticas y recreativas.

Los muestreos hechos en el a?±o 2003 arrojaron como resultado que el 92% de las playas monitoreadas estuvieron limpias la mayor parte del a?±o. En los casos en los que se detectaron playas con recurrencia de concentraciones bacteriol??gicas arriba del l??mite fijado, se tomaron medidas correctivas en coordinaci??n con las autoridades locales y estatales ...

Estos problemas se han atendido y se reflejan en resultados positivos en la calidad de agua de los muestreos de febrero del 2004, en donde s??lo tres playas de 218 presentaron niveles altos de enterococos: playa Rosarito II, en Tijuana, donde hay 5 playas limpias; R??o Cuale, una de las 14 playas de Puerto Vallarta y La Boquita, una de las 10 playas que tiene Manzanillo.
