Oaxaca -- Mexico is known for its colorful, grandiose festivals, but one of the most unique is the "Night of the Radishes." La Noche de Rabanos celebrated for each year on December 23rd. It is one of the most unique festivals in the world as it combines horticulture and folk art.

New online the Noticias website -- a travel feature about the Sierra Norte

A Day in Tonantzin Country
by Stan Gotlieb

MEXICO -- We met Philippe at the Pochote Market, where he was selling an
assortment of vegetables grown in intensive raised beds on a farm project
not too far the other side of Ocotlán. Philippe was born in Mexico, sent to
the United States for his education as a teacher, and he worked in the
public schools in New York City. Now he works in a larger school.

Philippe and a few of his friends developed the Instituto Tonantzin Tlalli
-- a land reclamation project in southern Mexico, and sought funds from
various foundations. The Kellog Foundation liked the idea, and contributed a sizeable chunk of dough to get the project off the ground.

OAXACA CITY -- The traveler information center for Oaxaca's tourism secretariat (SEDETUR) has moved! It's no longer across from the Alameda.

The change took place yesterday (April 14th). You'll find the helpful staff with the rest of the SEDETUR crew at Murguia #206 (between 5 de Mayo and Reforma)

Unraveling the Mysteries of Mexico - Jeremy Garrett, NaTour Communications

"After the worldís largest city, I boarded the six-hour bus to the state of Oaxaca. The drive is an awesome route through a dry valley, with spectacular mountains and canyons on both sites. The city of Oaxaca itself is gorgeous, as multi-colored buildings and cathedrals frame open-air plazas and cafes."

PostPosted: Sat Jul 31, 2004 7:14 am    Post subject: Language Study at the Source Reply with quote

AVISO -- Here's good news. New York Times publishes this article in tomorrow's paper. The author writes about learning Spanish abroad and uses Oaxaca as an example. Also, note how travelers are using guidebooks AND the Web in making travel decisions.

Language Study at the Source
By JANET PIORKO
>> http://travel2.nytimes.com/2004/08/01/travel/01prac.html?n=null

The Internet has made it easy for many to book their own programs, as I did for two trips to study Spanish at two schools in Oaxaca, Mexico, within the past year. The decision to do it yourself or to use an agency specializing in such trips depends on your time and patience for research, the ease of communicating with the school and your need for flexibility.

Language trips range from a week to several months, with two to four weeks typical. Agencies usually handle lodging but not flights, though they can refer clients to companies that do.

A fellow student at Amigos del Sol in Oaxaca in March, Bebe Anderson, a lawyer in New York, also researched and booked her own three-week trip. She had used an agency, AmeriSpan in Philadelphia, for a similar vacation in Guatemala, in 1998. For her first trip, "it appealed to me that they dealt with everything," she said. For the Oaxaca trip, Ms. Anderson did research in the Lonely Planet guide and on the Web and chose Amigos del Sol.
