"Sian Ka'an is Mayan for "where the sky is born." Such poetic language perfectly suits this lovely reserve, which comprises tropical forests, wetlands, reefs and a beautiful Caribbean coast."

Tales from the Yucatan -- The Other Side of Chichen Itza: Was It the First "Cancun?" by Jeanine Kitchel

Chichen Itza had actually been a tourist destination for over 500 years. After being twice abandoned by both the Itzas (750 AD) and the Maya (1194 AD) the site became a pilgrimage spot for religious groups in the 1500s because of its sacred cenote.

We offer news, business reviews, tips, advice, and unsolicited & extremely personal opinions about living in Mexico, Merida, and the Yucatan. This is a community project by the gringo residents here, in and around Merida. Coping with a new language, a new culture, and the miscellaneous regulations imposed on foreigners in Mexico has tended to bind us.

These ëactivitiesí would seem to compromise Fonaturís plan for the Costa Maya (published in 2002), identifying it as ìintegrally planned resortî area featuring ìlow densityî and ìabsolute respect for biodiversityî. It isnít quite working out that way.

The Austin American-Statesman's travel section on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, featured a piece on the Yucatan cenotes:

http://www.statesman.com/life/content/life/stories/travel/12/31/31cenotes.html

an excerpt, by Deborah Abrams Kaplan

Cenotes are unique to the Yucatán, which has one of the largest limestone platforms in the world, covering more than 96,500 square miles. Millions of years of ocean level changes, combined with rain and carbon dioxide, dissolved the limestone. The result? An estimated 7,000 cenotes — sinkholes that are natural entrances to the underwater river system.

More than a thousand of these caves have been explored and mapped, showing the Yucatán as the source of the world's longest underwater cave systems.

Leona Vicario and Cancun's Arboretum
by Jeanine Kitchel
http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/mexico/yucatan/tales/0707yucatan.html

"Long known as Cancun's garden spot, Leona Vicario becomes a pilgrimage for every Cancun homeowner with a green thumb. Not only is this bucolic pueblo only 40 miles from Cancun, but prices are irresistibly low. Some common plants can be purchased for as little as five pesos. Other more exotic flora such as birds of paradise, orchids, red ginger, heliconia, are more expensive but ever present. Tinier Cristobol Colon, just past Leona Vicario, offers still more nurseries."
