Forwarding an announcement from the North American Mountain Forum:
International Mountain Day 2005
Mountain Tourism ñ making it work for the poor
Mountains have become one of the worldís top tourist
destinations and in many mountain countries of the
world, there is real potential to develop tourism even
further. Tourism in mountains can provide new
opportunities for local communities by earning income,
opening new markets and increasing cultural exchanges.
But it can also often damage landscapes, disrupt
cultures and worsen the lives and livelihoods of
mountain people -- already amongst the worldís poorest
and hungriest.
Sustainable tourism benefits mountain communities as
well as satisfies the needs of tourists -- now and in
the future. The theme of this yearís UN International
Mountain Day (11 December) is ëSustainable Tourism for
Poverty Alleviation in Mountain Areasí -- a call for
all of us to work side-by-side with mountain people to
steer tourism on a more sustainable path and to use it
as a force to fight poverty in mountain areas.
FAO, the lead coordinating agency for the UN
International Year of Mountains (2002), is mandated to
lead observance of UN International Mountain Day.
Visit FAOís special International Mountain Day Web
site for information materials and resources to help
you observe the Day.

HEADLINES -- African nations hope tourism will cut poverty - Terry Leonard/Associated Press
| Quote: |
The International Council of Tourism Partners has launched a Mission Africa initiative to triple tourism income on the continent by 2015. ICTP President Geoffrey Lipman concedes, however, that the initiative will be a success only if it reduces poverty. But he added that "there is no better potential of an export service that all the African countries can produce than tourism; it's the one commodity they all have, and in some ways the lack of development to date means that it's a relatively unspoiled product, of the type that thoughtful travelers are seeking."
