|
|
Good intentions, no doubt, lie behind the creation of ecotourism certification schemes. But few of the schemes actually work.
Planeta initiated a global dialogue which reviewed the pros and cons of various programs. The Ecotourism Certification Workshop (2000-2003) concluded there is more disagreement than consensus.
There are a number of serious problems, starting with the lack of consumer demand. Also, most stakeholders have been left out of the process, including community representatives as well as owners of leading ecotourism businesses.
Many leading tour operators don't believe certification and accreditation schemes will work as envisioned in the short term. Their voices, however, are rarely heard in official meetings. The result is that institutional funders have no idea that certification is a such a hornet's nest.
For those interested in the subject, the Planeta website has published a guide to understanding ecotourism certification
>> http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/tour/certification.html
Also, we hosted the 2000-2003 Ecotourism Certification Workshop online. The summary of that discussion is posted online
>> http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/tour/certsummary.html
And for those who wish to download a powerpoint presentation, the key criticisms of certification are explored in the "Stop the Steamroller" critique
