In the tourism by geography section is no natural "home" for arctic tourism, so I wondered if there would be a possibility to open a separate folder?

In October we formed the Sustainable Arctic Tourism Association with member all around the Arctic. This took place at a conference in northern Finland.

Our aim is
to provide a forum for tourism operators and other stakeholders
to launch a marketing label

And we like to get in touch with people and operators who would like to know more and maybe later become members of this association.

I have the following question to the readers of this forum: does climate change play a role for your business/ work/ interest in arctic or northern tourism? Do you feel it is something that is taken into account when building a business, developing a tourism destination or engaging a community? If so, is the focus on minimizing negative impacts or also on actively reducing greenhouse gas emissions?

WWF has just started a cooperation with a tour operator in the Norwegian high-Arctic (Spitsbergen Travel) on reducing their "climate footprint", which we hope will become a pilot effort for others to follow.

Arctic Tourism Update
• Arctic Tourism & Conservation Grant
The deadline (Dec 16) for this year’s WWF Arctic Tourism & Conservation Grant is approaching fast! This is a great opportunity to realize environmental or conservation projects you might have been thinking about for a long time. More information can be found here: http://www.panda.org/tourism
If you feel unsure whether your idea is eligible or otherwise have questions, please contact me!

• Global Ecotourism Conference 2007
You might remember the World Ecotourism Summit in May 2002, and some of you may have even been to the preparatory event, the Arctic Ecotourism Conference in Hemavan, Sweden, which WWF was the lead organizer for. Now a new global ecotourism event is coming up May 14 – 16 here in Oslo, Norway. Main organizers are The International Ecotourism Society, UNEP and Ecotourism Norway (where WWF is a member of), and more information can be found at http://www.ecotourismglobalconference.org/ Please let me know if you are planning on coming. I would love to meet you (again).

• Arctic cruise tourism: AECO
Cruise tourism is a growing business, also in polar waters. Expedition cruise operators operating on Svalbard, Norway, have taken responsibility, started an industry association and developed environmental and safety guidelines for their members and visitors. While still a young organization, the membership body is already an important stakeholder for Arctic authorities also outside the archipelago in the Norwegian high-Arctic. WWF is glad for this industry initiative and looks forward to follow its development. www.aeco.no

• Sustainable Arctic Tourism Association (SATA)
The SATA was founded last fall at the end of the 3 year circumpolar project on sustainable arctic tourism SMART, and aims to become a resource, networking platform and information clearing house for arctic sustainable tourism and related issues. Principles defining what sustainable arctic tourism is, training outlines on how to make tourism more sustainable and best practice examples were collected and can be found on the website. The association is looking for people that either actively are interested in arctic-wide experience exchange, cooperation and not least marketing, or just want to support the objectives of this network. More information can be found at http://www.arctictourism.net/sat_sata.htm (please be patient if the website is still not fully “up to date”). If you are interested in the quarterly e-newsletter, please send a short email to wendy@awrta.org

The 'ticking time bomb' under melting ice in Arctic - Jeremy Rifkin

Any lingering doubts about how ill-prepared we are to face up to the reality of climate change should have been laid to rest this month when two Russian minisubmarines dove two miles under the Arctic ice to plant a Russian flag made of titanium on the seabed. The government of Vladimir V. Putin claims that the seabed under the North Pole, known as the Lomonosov Ridge, is an extension of Russia's continental shelf and therefore Russian territory that will be open for oil exploration.

Russia is not alone in making such a claim. Geologists think that 25 percent of Earth's undiscovered oil and gas may be embedded in the rock under the Arctic Ocean. No wonder Norway, Canada and Denmark (through its possession of Greenland) are all using the continental-shelf argument to claim the Arctic seabed as an extension of their own sovereign territories. The sudden interest in Arctic oil and gas has put a fire under U.S. lawmakers to ratify the 1982 Law of the Sea Treaty, which allows signatory nations to claim exclusive commercial exploitation zones up to 200 miles out from their coastlines.

Arctic Becomes Tourism Hot Spot, But Is That Cool?

Global warming has given rise to a new niche in the booming eco-tourism business: climate tourists. These visitors seek out places where a long-term warming trend -- subject of a global summit hosted by the United Nations this week -- is starting to have a discernible impact. Yet some say there's a big irony in this kind of travel: Any trip by train, plane or cruise ship pumps carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and potentially contributes to the warming of the planet.

What most politicians won’t talk about: the fate of the Arctic
http://www.climatecodered.net/arctic.html

Quote:
More than 80% of the mass of sea-ice in the Arctic Ocean in summer has already been lost. An area of summer sea-ice once as large as Australia is rapidly disintegrating, with consequences that will reverberate around the globe. Scientists with expertise on the Arctic environment are predicting that the Arctic Ocean will be ice free in summer between 2010 and 2013, and that once lost, the Arctic summer sea-ice will not return.
