|
|
A highlight of the Border Energy Forum was the premiere of a new guide to electric power in Mexico, prepared by the Center for Energy Economics at the University of Texas.
Information about the guide is available on the Center's Web site, and it can be downloaded in English and in Spanish:

Sempra in Mexico wind-power deal - LA Times
http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-briefs30.7jun30,1,5380811.story
| Quote: | | Sempra Energy, owner of the largest U.S. natural-gas utility, said it agreed to buy the development rights to a wind-power facility in Mexico as part of a venture into renewable energy. Sempra said it agreed to acquire the rights to develop a 250-megawatt wind-power project near La Rumorosa, a town in Baja California about 70 miles east of San Diego, where Sempra is based. It is buying the rights from Cannon Power Corp. One megawatt is enough to power about 750 average U.S. homes. |

Questions - Did anyone attend the border energy forum in San Diego?
Are reports online? Any podcasts or flickr galleries? Any new developments to keep an eye on in 2008? |

|
|
More than 200 people turned out for Border Energy Forum XIV on October 18 and 19, 2007, in San Diego.
The focus was on renewable energy potential in the Southwest United States and Northern Mexico.
Other key issues on this year’s agenda included the future of energy policy; water and energy efficiency; border energy infrastructure; transportation fuels; financing energy projects; energy production and the environment; and natural gas production and markets.
The Border Energy Forum brings together leaders from industry, government, educational institutions, and environmental organizations to develop cutting edge strategies well grounded in economic reality. It has gained a strong reputation as a neutral ground to discuss energy-related challenges common to both sides of the border.
Presentations will be posted on the Border Energy Forum Web site at:

| Soll, a question - how is the energy forum powered? Would you be able to find out the energy sources used for the actual conference? |

|
|
The Border Energy Forum is a relatively small conference, located at a hotel each year. This year's site in Monterrey will be the Crowne Plaza, which gets it power from the Comision Federal de Electricidad.
To the best of my knowledge, the CFE doesn't rely on any renewable power for its fuel mix in northeastern Mexico.
In the past, we have asked host hotels to consider energy efficiency measures - and worked with the Camino Real hotel in Saltillo to carry out a fullfledged energy audit (Forum IX six years ago.) |

Thanks for the background. Let us know if you conduct an audit for this year's event or how audits could be implemented in the future. Personally, I'd like to see some sort of competition that would encourage the conference center venues and the cities themselves.
On a sidenote, I'll be updating the Planeta.com guide to Monterrey -- http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/mexico/nuevoleon/monterrey.html -- and if you have any editorial suggestions, please send them via email. |
