Planeta's coverage of Ecuador is among our most developed -- thanks to numerous friends and colleagues in-country. For those interested in Ecuador, Planeta is proud to present our Ecuador Guide
>> http://www.planeta.com/ecuador.html
Planeta participated in a multi-stakeholder group, GIFEE, which identified seven, interdependent sectors for action: the Internet, Education, Conservation, Waste Management, Financing, Promotion, and Cooperation and make the following seven recommendations to national, regional and local governments:
1. Favor the Internet as a policy, management, educational and promotional tool
2. Develop school and continuing education programs on ecotourism, nature conservation, and sustainable use
3. Expand and improve protected areas through scientific and transparent management
4. Improve waste management nationally and in the tourism sector through Reduce, Reuse and Recycle policies and plan for clean sustainable transport
5. Improve access to financing and education for small private and community ecotourism efforts
6. Redesign the tourism promotion strategy of Ecuador to be imaginative, efficient and sustainable
7. Encourage cooperation with and between all stakeholders

Quito is currently hosting the Miss Universe beauty pageant. 80 contestants from around the world are in the country, enjoying its sights and its people's hospitality.
The Quito Tourism Corporation runs a great site with all you need to know about the city:
www.quito.com.ec
They've also got a mini-site for the Miss Universe event, with a calendar of events visitors can attend and all sorts of useful information. They're also running a competition: vote for your favourite candidate and you could win a Galapagos cruise and other great prizes!

Dominic Hamilton

Mary, this is excellent news!
Can you ask the organizers if they would like to establish reciprocal links with our Ecuador Guide?

|
|
Hello -
Just to let members know that the documentary I worked on about oil last year in Ecuador is currenly showing on CBC in Canada, and will be on PBS in the US and BBC3 in the UK in September (TBC). Please look out for the programme. It's one of a three-part series entitled 'Oil: the world over a barrel' and is the second instalment, sharing its 55 minutes with Angola. The other areas covered in the series include the Trans-Caspian area, Alaska and Canada.
For some notes about the production, see my site at:
http://www.nomadom.net/pipeline/paladin/oilstories.htm
You can find out more about the award-winning producers, PITV, at their site: www.pitv.com
The trial in the Amazon of Chevron-Texaco continues. See the website http://www.chevrontoxico.com
for more on the plaintiffs' case.
Saludos,
Dominic Hamilton

Quito (1,4 million inhabitants) is the capital of Ecuador, has two universities, several prestigious schools and scientific institutes. The city located at an average altitude of 2800 m, was founded in 1534 by the Spanish, on an undulating ground which is composed mainly of volcanic ash coming from the Pichincha volcano (4776 m).

Interesting!

One question -- Are there really only two universities in Quito? And focusing on our interests, what are the major academic programs in tourism, conservation and ecotourism?
Checking the Quito Hotel website, I don't find a link to our site. That is a standard request in our forum that if you care to promote your site, we ask for reciprocity -- a link from your site to Planeta.com.
Many thanks!
