I think it gets really interesting when text is overlayed on the maps.
For instance Yahoo TagMaps is extremely appealing: http://tagmaps.research.yahoo.com/

I am trying to work on a similar aesthetic for the indigi-net site: http://indiginet.org

Twittervision is a fantastic visualization of text over the world map. It basically takes the information from twitter, and overlays it on a map, but also has these pop-up windows every few seconds. So literally you are taken to posts from around the world. Very slick: http://twittervision.com/

Hello,
I would like to share with you a newly discovered great google-maps application, that is really easy to use: www.rrove.com
They call themselves Social Bookmarks for Places, great service and no technical skills are needed to use it.
It took me 10 minutes to see the results on my website, see : http://www.soomaa.com/?id=180&lang=eng
and another one:
http://www.soomaa.com/?id=178&lang=eng
There is also a great feature which allows Rrove to link your Flickr photos to a place by geotagging them.
Try it!

Explore John Muir's Life with Google Earth
http://www.sierraclub.org/muir/

Quote:
Celebrate the life of the legendary naturalist, explorer, writer, inventor and Sierra Club founder: use Google Earth to explore key places and events in Muir's life.

One of the most important figures in the history of conservation, Muir devoted his adult life to the preservation of wilderness and was instrumental in the creation of America's national parks. We've chosen ten places and events in Muir's life to highlight for the launch of our presentation. Among the places we explore:

1. 1838 - Muir's birthplace in Scotland
2. 1849 - His boyhood home in Wisconsin
3. 1867 - The 'Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf'
4. 1868 - Yosemite Valley
5. 1871 - Hetch Hetchy Valley
6. 1872 - Muir's ascent of Mt. Ritter
7. 1879 - Muir Glacier in Glacier Bay, Alaska
8. 1880 - Muir's family home in Martinez, California
9. 1880 - An adventure with Stickeen, the dog, in Alaska
10. 1905 - Glacier Point with Teddy Roosevelt

Learn more about the father of our national parks and the founding president of the Sierra Club: visit the famous John Muir Exhibit. Curated by Muir expert Harold Wood, the site is the most comprehensive John Muir resource on the Internet. We'll be adding more to the Google Earth map, and integrating it into the Exhibit, in the future.
