Updating our feature on the Viveros Garden
>> http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/mexico/df/viveros.html
"The Viveros of Coyoac·n is more than a working nursery. It's a not-so-secret garden in the heart of Mexico City. A 2.1-kilometer dirt path winds around the park that was established in the early 1900s by Mexican naturalist Miguel Angel de Quevedo." |

Interesting story in today's Herald
Bicycle path not used or cared for - Angelica Simon/Herald
http://www.mexiconews.com.mx/miami/22851.html
| Quote: | The 90-kilometer bike path system built by the previous city administration has turned out to be one of the most underused projects in Mexico City. The bicycle lanes, inaugurated with great fanfare on Jan. 25, 2004, have been all but forgotten. The paths themselves have been disappearing, both physically and in the minds of city residents.
A 2005 allocation of city funds aimed at rehabilitating part of the system has sat unused for more than a year. Last October city officials promised to finally use the 1.9 million pesos to improve the lane running down the center of Chapultepec Avenue from the Historic Center to Chapultepec Park. Part of that money would also be used for rehabilitating the paths inside the park itself. The planned improvements would include repainting the lanes, protecting them with large planters and installing along the way 40 structures for safely parking and locking the bicycles.
But none of those improvements were ever carried out. Now the city administration has changed, and the new government´s plans for the bike paths are unknown. |

Mexico City plans for bigger, better bike paths - Herald
http://www.mexiconews.com.mx/miami/23606.html
| Quote: | The Mexico City government on Thursday unveiled a series of projects and programs designed to encourage city residents to use bicycles more often. Capital officials inaugurated the first bike station along the old Cuernavaca train tracks, a route that has since been converted into a bike path.
Meanwhile, the bike path inaugurated four years ago by the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has fallen into a state of deterioration. Some stretches, like the bike lane that crosses through Álvaro Obregón precinct and the trails of Chapultepec Park, have been forgotten and in some places invaded by vehicular traffic. |
