Seven dead in Kenya park gunfight

Seven dead in Kenya park gunfight - BBC
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6672619.stm
Three wildlife rangers and four suspected poachers have been killed in a gun battle in Kenya.

A spokesman for Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said seven rangers patrolling the Tana River District were attacked by an unknown number of armed men.

Kenya has been hailed for its efforts in combating the trade in elephant tusks and other animal parts that is a big business for poachers in East Africa.

Wildlife tourism is an important source of revenue for Kenya.

Logging with care in Congo - BBC

Post by kurt_a »

Logging with care in Congo - John James/BBC News
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/f ... 028445.stm
The Mbendjele people of Congo-Brazzaville are using the latest satellite mapping technology to stake claim to a rainforest, two-thirds of which may be gone in 50 years.

This is the only place in tropical Africa that supplies timber which meets the international standard laid down by the Forest Stewardship Council. The Mbendjele take hand held satellite devices into the forest to create maps showing places of community importance. The Mbendjele seem happy - and indeed surprised - by the efforts the logging company is making to protect their way of life.

The myths of ecotourism - John Mbaria/East African
http://www.nationmedia.com/eastafrican/ ... 120072.htm

[quote]A new report demonstrates that though communities in Kenya have devoted substantial portions of their own land to the wildlife conservation on which ecotourism businesses are based, they have reaped minimal gain from such ventures. Instead, they have ended up enmeshed in exploitative partnerships with various private investors.

The report paints a gloomy picture of the reality of the much hyped notion current throughout the world

Disaster looms for Kenyan tourism

Disaster looms for Kenyan tourism - Charles Starmer-Smith/Telegraph
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/main. ... ws-105.xml
Tourism has established itself as one of the most important industries in Kenya, but it is very sensitive to insecurity and civil unrest, and can collapse overnight. As demonstrated in the past, it could take years to undo damage caused in a very small space of time. We are very concerned that, having recently recovered from an eight-year slump occasioned by precisely this kind of activity, we are once again faced with the ugly prospect of politically connected clashes.

The idea is simple. Harness the soaring popularity of blogging and social networking sites to boost the profile of smaller conservation groups and raise much-needed money in the process.

It is no co-incidence that foreign journalists are being arrested and hounded out of the country because Mugabe knows that if there is an uprising against him, he will repress it brutally.
