Last summer Indigenous Tourism Rights International conducted an online conference -- http://www.tourismrights.org/bbs -- among indigenous peoples about the issue of tourism certification and in particular a recent IDB grant in the Americas.

Joint project financed with GEF resources administered by IDB and World Bank
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) , the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Bank (WB) announced today a five-year joint program to promote sustainable development in indigenous communities in Central America. The program will be financed with a US$9 million grant from the GEF, US$4 million of which will be administered by the World Bank and US$5 million by the IDB.
The Integrated Ecosystem Management in Indigenous Communities Regional Project will strengthen the capacity of indigenous communities in Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama to protect and manage their natural and cultural resources, as well as recuperate and promote their cultural values and sustainable traditional land use practices.
The new project will be implemented by the Central America Indigenous and Peasant Coordination Association for Community Agroforestry (ACICAFOC), in coordination with the Central American Indigenous Council (CICA) and the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD).

Financing for infrastructure, cultural and environmental conservation and promotion of private investments
The Inter-American Development Bank today announced the approval of a $35 million soft loan to Honduras for a national sustainable tourism program designed to promote an industry with strong potential for boosting hard currency inflows, economic growth and employment.
The Honduran Tourism Institute will carry out the program, which will finance public sector investments in order to foster a socially and environmentally responsible model of tourism that raises living standards in local communities. Private sector investments will also be encouraged in large projects as well as in microenterprises and small- and medium-size businesses.

Planned tourist complexes could spell the end of the centuries-old way of life of the black minority here known as Garifuna. Sanchez fears a $100 million luxury hotel complex and golf course to be built next to his tiny wooden-shack village will destroy the local habitat and turn his sons from traditional fishers into low-paid menial workers.
