Amenity Migration (when tourists come to stay)
May 15-19 2008, the department of Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre, in collaboration with the International Amenity Migration Centre
(USA and Canada), hosted a conference called Understanding and Managing Amenity-led Migration in Mountain Regions.
Amenity migration is often described as migration for non-economic reasons. If you move to or buy property in a beautiful location, perhaps
one you visited as a tourist, and you do not intend to take a job there you are an amenity migrant. Communities in the US such as Aspen or Vail are
classic examples of communities experiencing amenity migration. However, the phenomenon exists all over the world.
Some scholars believe that this is really a new form of tourism.
The website for the 2008 conference - Understanding and Managing Amenity-led Migration in Mountain Regions - features lists of all the
speakers and copies of PowerPoint presentations delivered at the conference. Full proceedings will be available by May 2009.
