Ecotourism NZ Conference 2008

Operators focus on operation issues for the next Ecotourism NZ Conference
Planning for the 2008 Ecotourism NZ Conference is well underway with an online survey asking operators to contribute towards developing the content and themes for the conference programme. The conference will be held again at Shantytown, Greymouth from 12 to 14 August with a focus on attracting a higher number of operators to attend the event so that they can contribute to establishing strategies to support the development of ecotourism as an increasingly important tourism sector in New Zealand.

The key areas of interest continue to be certification of ecotourism operators; the dependence on the concession process to ensure the future of ecotourism businesses; and methods to improve business performance.

Sustainability will be a hot topic at the conference: 95% of the businesses surveyed are interested or very interested in learning about how they can introduce environmental sustainability practices into their operation.

Ecotourism NZ Conference 2008 - OUTCOMES

Post by ecotourismnz »

Outcomes and recommendations of Ecotourism NZ Conference 08
The conference led to a range of recommendations being made to help influence, shape and improve the ecotourism sector. The outcomes will be presented to relevant Government and industry organisations. They are:

Concessions
  • + Better communication is needed between DoC and concessionaires to ensure DOC understands their business
+ Simplification of the concession process is required
+ Stronger enforcement of rules and regulations is needed to protect the integrity of concessions
Maori Tourism
  • + Operators should engage with local iwi in order to work through what cultural stories they can tell
Certification
  • + Qualmark needs to ensure the unique elements of ecotourism are included in its new Enviro standards
+ The standards need to represent Maori components of Kaitiakitanga and Manaakitanga
+ Research is required to measure how certification influences the bottom-line of a business
General
  • + Continue to strengthen and promote relationship-building, networking and communication between ecotourism operators around the country
+ Promote word-of-mouth communications in the industry
Nature Levy
  • + The majority of delegates at the conference voted in support of a nature levy. Further research and discussion is needed.
