There are a lot of people who like to take short walking tours in a strange city, and who do not relish the idea of doing so in a group, trotting along behind a tour guide with a flag.

Ms. Weiner is the founder of iJourneys (iJourneys.com), which produces narrated walking tours for use with personal MP3 players, including iPods.
She has not done Berlin yet, but her tours now consist of the Left Bank of Paris, Ancient Rome, Old Rome, Florence, Venice, Pompeii, Vienna, Salzburg and Barcelona. Each costs $14.95 to download and includes a map. She has lately been wandering around Jerusalem with a recorder, making notes for her next digital narrative.

My name is Catherine Mack and I recently completed a Masters degree in Responsible Tourism at the University of Greenwich, London. I have combined these studies with travel journalism am now working as a freelance travel writer, specialising in responsible tourism. I am Irish, based in London and speak fluent French, having lived there for three years. My recent article in the UK broadsheet newspaper The Daily Telegraph offered an early opportunity to share some of my thoughts on travelling responsibly, and another article in a London paper called Metro describes a train journey I took from London to Spain to attend a travel conference. I was the only one of three delegates to opt for the train over the plane. Tony Juniper of Friends of the Earth was one of the others, so I felt in good company. Are wildlife tourists using guiding services? I thought this would be a sure thing given the enhanced experience they can provide, but a recent survey I did showed that guides were the least important factor in selecting a destination for wildlife watchers.
